DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

  

The Department of Philosophy was started in 1968 with Prof. Raja Raja Varma as its first Head. The Department offers BA Degree in Philosophy with an average intake of 60 students per year.Our graduate program produces first-rate scholars and teachers with a strong foundation in the history of philosophy, a well-rounded preparation in the diverse concerns of contemporary philosophy, and the skills to communicate effectively across different traditions and schools of thought. We encourage our students to become reflective citizens and lifelong learners while preparing them to pursue careers in government, non-profit sectors, or business. Our undergraduate program emphasizes the skills of critical reflection, written and oral communication, and creative problem-solving. Our graduates have an established track-record of successful placement in tenure-track positions at liberal arts colleges and research universities.

The members of the Faculty of the Department have an ongoing record of participating in seminars and conferences in India and abroad. All members of the Faculty are actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities, which have resulted in the publication of a number of books, articles and chapters in Philosophy texts in nationally reputed journals and anthologies. Dr. Johns K. Mangalam, Head of the Department of Philosophy, has brought hundreds of patients back to life who has been victims of alcohol addiction.  Dr. Maya S, writer and feminist activist, is chairing the Women's Cell of this College.  Dr. Biju K.P is serving National Service Scheme (NSS) as Program Officer. The fact that our faculty members have received accolades for their works, deserves special mention.

In recognition of collaboration with different charitable organizations. The department published an edited book titled “Samoohikarogyam: Chila Chinthakal” [ISBN: 978-93-5104-808-4] A collection of articles by multiple authors co-published by Institute for Social and Ecological Studies, Kozhikode, Keraleeyam Masika-Thrissur and Haritha Maithri, Angamaly, 2016. high standard of teaching and research, the Department was granted University Grants Commission (UGC) fund for organizing three days National Seminar on “Theorizing Ethics: Prospects and Challenges” during 20-22, January 2015. The department regularly organizes Indian Council for Philosophical Research (ICPR) Periodic Lectures on different research areas. The department has also undertaken a UGC research project during 2014-2016 on “Does Right to Death Contradict Right to Life”. The department regularly holds lectures, conferences, seminars, Webinars and symposiums.
